There’s a lot to look forward to when it comes to winter. The holidays, time spent with family and friends and the chance of waking up to a beautiful snow-covered landscape.
However, if you commute to work or school, winter weather may impact how you get around. Thankfully, the Dulles corridor has plenty of convenient options to get you to your destination safely and comfortably.
Here are some of the best ways to get around during winter weather:
Metro + Bus
The Metro is safe, reliable and climate-controlled – plus, it will fly by the traffic that stacks up in severe weather – making it the best option to get around during winter. Since it rides on rails with various safety systems in place, the Metro continues to run in rain, sleet and up to 6 inches of snow (excluding non-weather-related disruptions).
Fairfax Connector buses can operate in normal levels of snowfall, but in cases of severe weather the system is limited to only the safest routes. Only in the most extreme cases will service be suspended altogether.
There’s a bus nearby that can take you to the Metro and avoid a long walk in the cold! Throw on a warm jacket and head down to Sunrise Valley Drive and take the Fairfax Connector RIBS 3 bus to Wiehle-Reston East Metro Station. Your bus ride is free when you transfer to the Metro!
Gear Up for Your Walk or Bike Ride
If your destination is close enough to walk or bike to, make sure to gear up with some protective equipment to make your commute safe and comfortable.
We recommend keeping some of the following gear on-hand:
- Ice & Snow Grip Shoe Covers
- Bike Mitts
- Reflective Sash (worn over your preferred winter jacket)
- Touchscreen Gloves to protect your hands while using your smartphone to navigate
- Neck & Face Warmers
- Wool Socks to protect your feet
