How to Plan Ahead for a Snow-Safe, Cozy Commute

There’s a lot to love about winter—the holidays, time with family and friends, and snow-covered landscapes. However, winter weather can impact your commute to work or other outings.

This winter, the DC Metro area is forecast to receive more snowfall than average—around 6 inches or more than last winter (Source: NBC4 Washington). The good news? You’ve got convenient and reliable options to get you to your destination safely and comfortably.

Metro + Bus

The Metro is safe, reliable, and climate-controlled—plus, it glides past traffic that stacks up during a storm, making it the best option to get around during snowy weather. Since it rides on rails with various safety systems in place, the Metro continues to run in rain, sleet and up to 6 inches of snow (excluding non-weather-related disruptions).

Metrobus and Fairfax Connector buses operate during normal levels of snowfall. In heavier storms, routes may be limited to the safest routes, and in only the most extreme cases service will be suspended.

Gear Up for Walking or Biking

If your destination is close, keep a winter kit ready that includes some protective gear. These are some things to include in your kit to make your commute safe and comfortable:

  • Ice & Snow Grip Shoe Covers
  • Bike Mitts
  • Reflective Sash (worn over your preferred winter jacket)
  • Touchscreen Gloves to protect your hands while using your smartphone to navigate
  • Neck & Face Warmers
  • Wool Socks to protect your feet
